Teenagers Rule U.S. Ladies Figure Skate
Solid performances – if not show stopping – lead Rachel Flatt and Mirai Nagasu to Vancouver next month for the Olympics. Flatt, 17 and Nagasu, 16, placed first and second in the ladies event at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Spokane, Washington. The championships ended Saturday night with the ladies free skate.
Sasha Cohen, Olympic silver medalist in 2006, was eliminated from consideration for the two slots available for Vancouver when she finished fourth. Now 25, Cohen had not skated competitively for four years.
Flatt and Nagasu were confirmed for the U.S. team shortly after the end of competition at a meeting of the international committee of U.S. Figure Skating.
The week-long championships were broadcast by NBC-TV.
Guadalajara Out of Youth Olympic Games
Guadalajara ends its bid for the 2014 Youth Olympic Games. The bid committee, meeting Saturday, made the decision to drop the bid in favor of concentrating on preparations for the 2011 Pan American Games, which face construction issues.
"Despite the efforts, time constraints for serious financial constraints and the urgency of completing and consolidating the actions related to the Pan American Games, it was concluded that under such circumstances it is impossible to assume, simultaneously, the organization of two events of such importance and complexity,” says a statement from Jalisco State Governor Emilio Gonzalez Marquez.
The end of the candidacy comes just weeks before the IOC is to decideon a 2014 YOG host. Poznan, Poland and Najing, China are the two cities remaining in the race.
A report from an IOC Evaluation Commission issued earlier this month indicated low level of risk for Nanjing, more risk for the bids from Poznan and Guadalajara. The IOC report singled out for Guadalajara over the division of responsibilities between the Pan Am Games and the YOG.
Pan Am 2011 Shakeup
Jalisco Governor Gonzalez is the new president of COPAG, the organizing committee for the 2011Pan Ams.
The new mayor of Guadalajara, Jorge Sandoval Aristotle, who took office this month, declined to take the presidency, especially with the commanding presence the Jalisco State Government has taken in staging the games. Gonzalez stepped forward late last year to extend financial guarantees that the previous Guadalajara mayor rejected.
The Pan American Village, for which construction has just started, is now located in a suburb and the location of the stadium needed for athletics is still uncertain.
“PASO reiterates its confidence and offers its full support for the Mexican Olympic Committee, the Organizing Committee and its Chairman, in the assurance that they will know what is needed to keep up the high commitment of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, with the Olympic Family in America”, said Pan American Sports Organization President Mario Vazquez Rana in a statement after the changes were announced Jan. 22.
