Taekwondo History

For the first time, Korea failed to capture the overall men’s title at the taekwondo world championship. That honor went to Iran this year. Korea did win the women’s overall title, however.

Iran won three gold medals, one silver and two bronze medals for a total of 74 points in the men’s competition. Korea had two gold medals and two silvers for 61 points. Turkey came next with one gold, one silver and one bronze for 48 points.

In the women’s category, Korea won one gold, two silvers and three bronzes for 58 points, followed by China with two golds and two silvers for 55 points, and France with two golds and one bronze for 45 points.

Competition took place at Gyeongju Indoor Stadium in Gyeoungju, South Korea.

WADA Suspends Lab

The World Anti Doping Agency-accredited laboratory in Tunis, Tunisia.

A statement from WADA says the lab will be unable to perform doping tests for six months, effective May 6.

No exact reason was given for the suspension, but WADA did say that it is responsible for ensuring accrediting its labs and if one does not comply withstandards established by the International Standard for Laboratories, it may suspend a laboratory.

Equestrian Headquarters

Horse sport has a new home in Lausanne.

On Friday, the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) inaugurated the HM King Hussein I Building.

The building is named after the father of HRH Princess Haya, FEI president.

Gold Medal Rematch

Canada got the better of the United States at the men’s ice hockey world championships in Slovakia on Friday.

The game was a rematch of sorts, as the two North American neighbors met in last year’s Olympic gold medal match, with Canada claiming victory then too. However, the most recent matchup was just a qualification round game the world championships.

With the loss, the U.S. could still qualify for the playoff round while Canada’s promotion seems all but assured.

The top four teams from each qualifying pool advance to the playoffs.

Coke Headquarters Shrouded in Mystery

A mysterious white netting is draped around three of the four sides of One Coca-Cola Plaza at Coke’s world headquarters in Atlanta.

The purpose of it remains a mystery, its existence seemingly unknown by Coke staff.

When asked what purpose the netting serves, Petro Kacur, a spokesman for the beverage giant told Around the Rings: "what netting?"

Even the city’s newspaper of record, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, is in the dark about what will be its ultimate use. However, rumors are circulating that it will play a part in the company’s 125th anniversary celebration, scheduled for this Saturday.

The AJC reports of a full slate of activities and parties for the anniversary.

"Special Correspondent" for Omega

Omega announced its "special correspondent" for the 2012 Olympics—the official countdown clock in Trafalgar Square.

Yes, you read that correctly.

According to a statement, Omega said "The clock itself has agreed to be our special correspondent, filing reports on its own dedicated Twitter timeline".

Interested parties can follow the clock @omega2012clock.

Omega says is perfectly located to capture the excitement of the lead up to the 2012 Games.

A tweet from the clock reads "To get in the Olympic party mood,Trafalgar Square is to be turned into a giant dance studio in July 2012, better get my dancing shoes ready!"

2012 Mascots and the Royal wedding

The London 2012 mascots send their best wishes to the new royal couple, Prince William and Kate Middleton.

LOCOG released photos of the Wenlock and Mandeville festooned in Queen’s Guard and Beefeater’s uniforms at various London landmarks.

Photos of the mascots contained musings on their new roles, such as Mandeville’s query: "If Kate wears one of the tiaras from the Crown Jewels for the Royal Wedding, and I'm a Beefeater, does that make me her personal bodyguard?!"

No word yet on what the Olympic couple picked up for "WillKat" off their gift registry.

Softball Congress

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma will be the site of the International Softball Federation Congress.

The U.S. city will serve as joint host with the Amateur Softball Association of America.

The scheduled dates for the congress are Oct. 27-30.
