Samaranch Hospitalized in "Serious Condition"
Former IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch is in a Barcelona hospital where he is said to be in "serious condition" for heart problems.
The 89 year-old is being treated at Quiron Hospital, which issued a statement from its director of internal medicine.
"He is currently under close observation and his prognosis is very serious," says a hospital official.
Samaranch entered the hospital Sunday and is being treated on a ventilator and with drugs, says the hospital.
Samaranch stepped down as IOC president in 2001 after 21 years in the post, retaining the title of IOC honorary life president.
Just days after his retirement, he was hospitalized for several weeks and has had occasional hospital stays since then.
In October last year he was admitted to a hospital in Monaco after becoming ill at the Sportel TV convention.
He has maintained an active travel schedule since retiring, attending the first two weeks of the Vancouver Olympics.
In an interview with Around the Rings last year, Samaranch said he was trying to reduce his travels.
At the IOC session in Copenhagen last October, Samaranch spoke on behalf of the Madrid bid for the 2016 Olympics.
"I know that I am very near the end of my time," he said as he asked colleagues to vote for Madrid.
Dr. Esteban Mur of Quiron Hospital says while Samaranch is in grave condition, he says Samaranch has proved resilient after past bouts with illness.
"He always has recovered very well and in this case, if it occurs, the recovery would be absolute," the doctor is quoted by Spanish newspaper ABC.
One Candidate for ROC President Job
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Zhukov is the only candidate to succeed Leonid Tyagachev as the next president of the Russian Olympic Committee.
Zhukov was the only individual to post election credentials by the 14:00 GMT deadline on Monday. A formal election is scheduled for May 20.
With no other candidates, it appears the Zhukov will lead the ROC in its preparation for the Sochi 2014 Winter Games. Zhukov served as a member of the Sochi 2014 bid team and leads a supervisory board that oversees Olympic preparations.
Tyagachev resigned his post in March following a disappointing showing by Russia at the Vancouver Games, where Russia finished 11 th in the medal count.
COC Names CEO and COO
Canadian Olympic Committee President-elect Marcel Aubut revealed the new leadership team of the COC as it transitions into the post-Vancouver 2010 era.
Aubut announced on Monday that Canadian Speed Skating CEO Jean Dupré will take over as CEO and secretary general and Chris Overholt is the new chief operating officer and chief marketing officer.
Dupré spent the past 15 years as the director general of SSC. During his tenure, SSC earned the IOC Sporting Excellence Award and Canadian speed skaters collected 30 medals over the past three Winter Games.
Overholt brings experience working with professional sports franchises.
"We were looking for two individuals with unique skill sets and a strong passion for sport," Aubut said.
"We have inherited a precious legacy from the 2010 Games, and wanted to ensure that both roles were filled by highly experienced professionals that continue the COC upon its upward trajectory. We have a dynamic team, solid on all fronts, ready to deliver upon the compelling vision we have set for the COC."
More Ash Cloud Postponements
The travel situation in Europe is forcing organizers around the world to adjust plans.
On Tuesday, the International Boxing Federation delayed the start of 2010 Youth World Boxing Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan until Sunday, April 25. The championships are the only qualification event for the Singapore Youth Olympic Games that will take place in August.
Elsewhere, the 2010 Stadium Business Summit 2010 has been moved to June 17 and 18 in Dublin, Ireland. Stadium Business Summit Ian Nuttall said he made the decision to move the event so more people could attend. The Stadium Business Awards 2010 will take place at the Guinness Storehouse on June 17.
"By June, the dust will have settled, the weather will be warmer and the Guinness still cold!" added Stadium Business Founder Summit Ian Nuttall.
