US Figure Skating Rules TV’s Weakest Night
The 2010 U.S. Figure Skating Championships fared well in terms of viewers in the arena and on television.
Organizers say the championships attracted a record 158,170 fans to Spokane Arena. The 10-day event took place for the second time in a row in Spokane, located in the eastern part of Washington state.
Men and pairs competition was held Jan. 16 - 17 and women competed this past weekend.
The women's final on Saturday night finished first in the ratings for 10-11 p.m. The final aired from 9-11 p.m. EST on NBC and its audience increased each half hour. The last hour was first in 18-49 age for men and adults 18-49, and men and women ages 18-34.
A total of 5.3 million viewers watched the women’s finals, a 30 percent increase from last year.
Kerrigan Brother Faces Charges Over Father’s Death
The father of Olympic figure skater Nancy Kerrigan is dead. Her brother Mark charged with assaulting 70 year-old Daniel Kerrigan, but not murder.
Mark, 45, who lives in the same home as his parents in Stoneham, Mass., told police he got into an altercation with his father after he would not let him use the phone.
The elder Kerrigan fell to the floor, apparently unconscious.
Mark Kerrigan is reported to have told police he thought his father was faking the condition. The police say Kerrigan was “belligerent” and that pepper spray was used to subdue him
He has pleaded not guilty to assault charges but remains in jail. The 45 year-old served prison time in 2005 for domestic violence.
His sister, Nancy Kerrigan, 40, won the silver medal for figure skating at the 1994 Olympics just weeks after she was clubbed in the leg at the U.S. championships by accomplices of rival Tanya Harding.
Singapore YOG Launches Scholarship Program
Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organizing Committee chairman Ser Miang Ng has unveiled a scholarshipprogram for young athletes to study in Singapore.
Available to all 205 National Olympic Committees, there are six scholarships in seven sports; aquatics, athletics, badminton, football, golf, sailing and table tennis, are available to study at the Singapore Sports School.
Youths who win the scholarship will start school in Jan. 2011.
The scholarship is part of the legacy program of the 2010 Singapore YOG.
Boxing Extends Romanian Boxing Federation Suspension
International Boxing Federation AIBA extends its suspension of Romanian Boxing Federation president Rudel Obreja to a total of 13 years for violating safety rules andfalsifying information.
Originally, AIBA originally suspended Obreja for two years after he ordered boxers during the 2009 Iaisi Romanian Cup to compete without headguards, which violates AIBA Technical & Competition Rules. AIBA extended the suspension by 11 years following a review that Obreja presented false and forged information to the Disciplinary Commission.
In addition to the suspension, he will have to pay a fine of $19,000.
AIBA suspended the Romanian Boxing Federation for one month and fined the federation $14,400. RBF cannot hold any AIBA events until after a review by AIBA
