China Edges Japan for Gymnastics Team Gold
China has yet another team gold from the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships to add to its collection.
The six-member squad edged Japan for the title by 1.228 points. Germany rounded out the podium for a finish identical to that of the 2007 world champs.
Only once since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991 has China failed to take home the coveted team gold. Its gymnasts finished off the podium in 2001.
Beijing gold medalist Chen Yibing, reigning world champion Yan Mingyong and 2004 Olympic champion Teng Haibin ensured Thursday that would be a one-time-only affair.
Germany was the day’s surprise. Its squad sat fifth after prelims but charged up the standings even without national champion Marcel Nguyen.
Left off the podium was Beijing bronze medalist USA in fourth.
France, Russia, Great Britain and Korea rounded out the leader board.
Medals in all-around finals are up for grabs later Friday at the world championships that are taking place at Rotterdam's Ahoy Arena.
Individual event finals - four apparatus for women, six for men - are slated for Saturday and Sunday.
NOCs from U.S., Brazil Ink Partnership
The U.S. and Brazil agree to share Olympic resources just a year after biddingagainst each other for 2016 hosting rights.
USOC chairman Larry Probst and Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) president Carlos Nuzman finalized the partnership Thursday in Acapulco on the sidelines of the ANOC General Assembly.
The deal provides for the NOCs to exchange best practices with regards to youth development, leadership training, strategic planning and the construction of modern Olympic training centers.
"This pact formalizes the close ties that we have developed with our friends in the COB," Probst said in a statement, "and reinforces the importance of the USOC's full participation in the international Olympic Movement."
Brazilian Olympians will also receive preferential access to U.S. facilities in the run-up to London 2012 and beyond.
"We are in the beginning of our journey to 2016," Nuzman said, "and with this agreement, we will be able to better assist the technical preparation of the athletes of both countries."
Athlete exchanges between the two countries are in the works.
Team Great Britain Taps Leadership for London 2012
Team Great Britain has its leadership in place with less than two years to go until London 2012.
British Olympic Association CEO Andy Hunt will lead the delegation as chef de mission at the upcoming Summer Games.He filled the same role earlier this year in Vancouver.
"As an organization we have oriented ourselves to Games delivery mode already now in order to create a seamless transition from pre-Games to Games time in 2012, when Team GB's ambition will be to make the nation proud and inspire future generations with their performances," Hunt said Friday in a statement.
Clive Woodward, Tanya Crook, Jan Paterson, Mark England and Craig Hunter are aboard Team GB as deputy chefs de mission.
Hugh Chambers, Dave Reddin, Kate O’Sullivan, Darryl Seibel and Louisa Huddy round out the 11-strong leadership as directors.
"There is a tremendous depth and wealth of Olympic Games and sports performance focused experience across the team," Hunt said. "The distinct roles that we have developed will provide performance benefits that come from perfecting every aspect of delivery."
Team GB will send its largest-ever delegation to these Olympic Games.
Boxing Congress Still Up In Air
The International Boxing Association (AIBA) must wait the weekend for a court ruling that will make or break plans to hold the federation’s quadrennial congress Nov. 1-3 in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
The Lausanne Civil Court adjourned Wednesday after hearing a lawsuit presented by 13 national federations. A judge was expected to decide the case by Friday, but AIBA spokesman Paul O’Neil tells Around the Rings he’s still waiting.
