PyeongChang Partnership for SK Group
One of South Korea’s biggest business conglomerates is PyeongChang’s latest bid backer.
SK Group’s corporate contributions head Sang-Kon Nam activated the sponsorship Wednesday when he stopped by bid committee headquarters in Seoul to hand over a donation of almost $700,000.
"I would like to express my thanks to the SK Group for adding their support to the bid," Pyeongchang 2018 chairman Yang Ho Cho said in a statement.
"It is a great boost to our bid campaign as we look forward to highlighting how our bid and core concept of ‘New Horizons’ can help the Olympic Movement reach new markets."
As the country's fourth largest business group, SK boasts a portfolio of more than 90 companies.
"SK is proud to be a part of this campaign to bring the Winter Games to Korea for the first time," Nam said, "and we will continue to support the bid right through to the IOC host city decision in Durban."
That decision will come July 2 at the 123rd IOC session when a secret ballot determines whether PyeongChang, Munich or Annecy, France will stage the 2018 Winter Olympics.
