More Aid for Luger Family, Federation Investigation

The family of Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili is supposed to receive additional assistance from Vancouver Olympic organizers according to a report in The Vancouver Sun.

Kumaritashvili died Feb 12 in a training run crash at the Whistler Sliding Center, hours before opening ceremony of the Vancouver Olympics.

VANOC President John Furlong carried a check to Kumaritashvili’s family this week in Georgia, where a memorial service was held 40 days after the luger died.

"Our team is going to try to do some more, that is for sure," Furlong is quoted by the Sun’s Jeff Lee.

"We are just trying to get a number of things resolved right now at the end of the Games, but as a group before we retire the project we will certainly do something for the family that is outside of the insurance coverage," Furlong said.

The amount of the insurance benefit has not been disclosed.

FIL, the International Luge Federation, has already donated 10,000 euros to Kumaritashvili’s family and opened a bank account to receive donations.

FIL says it will release the findings of its inquiry into the crash on April 11.
