Almaty, Taipei City Win 2017 Universiades
Almaty, Kazakhstan and Taipei City, Chinese Taipei will host the winter and summer Universiades in 2017 respectively.
The decision from the executive board of FISU, the body governing university sport, came on Nov. 29.
Taipei City defeated Brasilia. Almaty was originally running against Trentino, but the Italian city withdrew from the race citing ongoing economic problems in Italy.
In a statement, FISU called the race for the summer games "a genuine thriller."
"I thank FISU for choosing my city to host the 2017 Summer Universiade," Taipei City mayor Hau Lung-bin said. "After bidding five times to get the Games we finally got them."
FISU President Claude-Louis Gallien said he is "confident Taipei City will deliver some wonderful Games."
In a statement, Almaty said its victory affords "an amazing opportunity for Almaty to promote its image as a new winter sports destination and to develop university sports in our city, our country and our region."
IOC, Red Cross Partner
The International Olympic Committee will team up with the Red Cross and the Red Crescent National Societies to promote peace through sport.
At a conference in Geneva on Nov. 28, the organizations pledged to work together on many initiatives including promoting physical education in schools and increasing children’s access to community-based activities.
Rene Fasel, IOC executive board member and president of the International Ice Hockey Federation, spoke at the conference and outlined how sport can promote non-violence.
"For the Olympic Movement in general, and for the IOC in particular, sport is more than competition," Fasel said.
"Sportunites the principles that the Olympic Movement holds dear: education, sustainability, non-discrimination, universality, humanism and solidarity. These are the principles that drive far-reaching social change."
The IOC began working with the Red Cross in 2003.
Free Admission to Olympic Museum
Visitors can enjoy the Olympic Museum in Lausanne for free until the end of January.
During this period, the museum will host a special exhibit that highlights the greatest Olympic moments of the past 20 years.
After eight weeks of free admission,the museum will be closed for 20 months for "major renovation".
From April to October 2013, Olympic memorabilia will be housed in front of the museum in the boat the MS Helvétie.
10-Year Olympic Anniversary
Sal t Lake City is planning a ceremonial re-light of the 2002 Olympic Cauldron as part of its 10-year anniversary of the Games.
Details of the celebration beginning Feb. 18 were released Wednesday with 11 days of festivities planned.
In addition to the cauldron lighting, a street fair and winter sport demonstrations such as a figure skating gala will take place.
