Almaty, Taipei City Win 2017 Universiades

Almaty, Kazakhstan and Taipei City, Chinese Taipei will host the winter and summer Universiades in 2017 respectively.

The decision from the executive board of FISU, the body governing university sport, came on Nov. 29.

Taipei City defeated Brasilia. Almaty was originally running against Trentino, but the Italian city withdrew from the race citing ongoing economic problems in Italy.

In a statement, FISU called the race for the summer games "a genuine thriller."

"I thank FISU for choosing my city to host the 2017 Summer Universiade," Taipei City mayor Hau Lung-bin said. "After bidding five times to get the Games we finally got them."

FISU President Claude-Louis Gallien said he is "confident Taipei City will deliver some wonderful Games."

In a statement, Almaty said its victory affords "an amazing opportunity for Almaty to promote its image as a new winter sports destination and to develop university sports in our city, our country and our region."

IOC, Red Cross Partner

The International Olympic Committee will team up with the Red Cross and the Red Crescent National Societies to promote peace through sport.

At a conference in Geneva on Nov. 28, the organizations pledged to work together on many initiatives including promoting physical education in schools and increasing children’s access to community-based activities.

Rene Fasel, IOC executive board member and president of the International Ice Hockey Federation, spoke at the conference and outlined how sport can promote non-violence.

"For the Olympic Movement in general, and for the IOC in particular, sport is more than competition," Fasel said.

"Sportunites the principles that the Olympic Movement holds dear: education, sustainability, non-discrimination, universality, humanism and solidarity. These are the principles that drive far-reaching social change."

The IOC began working with the Red Cross in 2003.
