Olympic Cauldron Fountain Enchanting Sochi 2014 Guests

The Olympic Cauldron located in the heart of the Olympic Park, with its light show, music and fountain is attracting guests from across the Park. The fountain comes alive to the sounds of Russian classical music and is illuminated in shades of five different colors as water jets rise to a height of 60 m.

The Firebird - a popular character of Russian fairy tales - is the inspiration for the Sochi 2014 Olympic Cauldron. The designers of the project depicted her with outstretched wings and a soaring head, crowned by the Olympic flame. The wings of the bird are in a circle with a diameter of almost 100 meters, where the fountain is located. The total height of the structure is almost 50 meters.

Several times a day the fountain performs a music program lasting 12 minutes. The light show is created using water cannons, robots and 1,000 strobes. The jets of water are illuminated individually in shades of five different colors. The complex program took experts a week to create and test each minute of the performance.

The fountain is surrounded by the pedestrian area for spectators. Lights are mounted on the perimeter of a closed ring with the aim to create the sensation of a bird flying over the ground using white strobe lights. The figure of the Firebird is also illuminated. The plumage of the bird is white opaque plastic, and special lighting effects cover the body of the birds' coloured "feathers", which can be lit in the colors of different flags.

A gas burner is mounted in the "head" with a diameter of about 3.5 m, which provides the fire crest.

The Cauldron and fountain are the centrepiece of the Olympic Park and are located in the Medals Plaza, where every night the medal awards ceremony for the Olympic champions takes place.
