Vonn, Svindal, Kucera Latest Winners at Alpine Worlds
Lindsey Vonn of the U.S., Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway and John Kucera of Canada are the latest champions to be crowned as the FIS World Alpine Skiing Championships enters its second week in Val d’Isere.
Vonn claimed her second world championship of the competition with victory in the women’s downhill and Svindal won the men’s super combined on Monday, while Kucera became the first male skier from Canada to win a world alpine title with his win in the men’s downhill on Saturday.
Hamlin Win Ends German Streak at Luge Worlds
Erin Hamlin of the U.S. ended a decade-long German winning streak in the women’s singles race at the FIL World Luge Championships in Lake Placid, N.Y. last weekend.
“It feels good to finally beat them (the German women),” Hamlin said. “At the same time, it will take a lot to stay up here, that’s for sure. But who knows, anything can happen in luge.”
Other world champions crowned in Lake Placid were Felix Loch of Germany (men’s singles) and Gerhard Plakensteiner and Oswald Haselrieder of Italy (doubles), with the Germans winning the team relay.
Kramer, Sablikova Win Titles at Speed Skating Worlds
Sven Kramer of the Netherlands and Martina Sablikova of the Czech Republic won the men’s and women’s title respectively at the World Allround Speed Skating Championships at the Viking Ship Olympic Oval in Hamar, Norway on Sunday.
The two-day competition, held on the 1994 Winter Olympic oval, included the men’s 500, 1,500, 5,000 and 10,000 meters and the women’s 500, 1,500, 3,000 and 5,000 meters.
Kramer won his third consecutive men’s title, becoming the first men’s speed skater in 30 years to win three straight times. American Eric Heiden won from 1977 through ’79.
Germany, Latvia, Norway Qualify for Olympic Hockey
Germany, Latvia and Norway each earned a spot in the hockey tournament at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver in qualifying competitions last weekend.
The tournaments in Frankfurt, Germany, Oslo, Norway and Riga, Latvia were the final Olympic qualification events, completing the 12-team field for the preliminary round of the hockey competition in Vancouver.
Germany defeated Slovenia 2-1 to win the qualifying tournament in Frankfurt, while Norway beat Denmark 4-2 at the Jordal Amfi Arena in Oslo, the hockey venue for the 1952 Winter Games, and Latvia scored a 4-1 victory over Italy in Riga.
In Vancouver next year, Norway will join host Canada, the U.S. and Switzerland in Group A, while Latvia will be in Group B along with Russia, Czech Republic and Slovakia and Germany is in Group C with Sweden, Finland and Belarus.

The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by UN-HABITAT executive director Anna Tibaijuka and IOC president Jacques Rogge during a ceremony at the Olympic committee’s headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland on Friday.
…Canadian Olympic athletes Emilie Heymans, a three-time diving medalist, and triathlete Kathy Tremblay have been hired by FitSpirit, an organization that promotes health and fitness among teenage girls, as motivational speakers to communicate to young women about the importance of sports.
