Olympians Greg Louganis and Tom Daley will dive together on September 24, at 11am, at the iconic Mission Viejo Nadadores diving tower, which closes at the end of September for an 18-month renovation. Their "last dive" will take place from the iconic tower from which Louganis once trained with legendary coaches Ron O’Brien and Sammy Lee. The construction will allow its Marguerite Aquatics Center to become the only diving platform on the West Coast able to host synchronized diving events.
Louganis and Daley hold a total of seven Olympic Medals, five for Louganis from the 1976-1988 Games, and two for Daley, including his recent bronze at the Rio 2016 Games. The two have also made history as LGBT athletes who have been proudly outspoken about their lives. Daley was one of a record 55 out LGBT athletes to participate in the Rio Olympics.
Said Kimberly Barnes, President of the MVN Dive Committee, "The event on 9/24 is the "Last Dive" off the iconic Mission Viejo Nadadores diving tower. Greg Louganis dived as a Nadadore when he was young and we felt it appropriate to give him the honor of the "last dive". We are also inviting him back to take the "First Dive" off of the new tower once it is completed. We are grateful to be partnering with the City of Mission Viejo on the upcoming renovation of our Aquatic Center. We are slated to be out of the pool in Fall 2016 for 12-18 months."
Greg Louganis, generally considered the greatest diver of all time, celebrates the 40th Anniversary of his first Olympic win (Silver Medal) in Montreal in 1976, and four Gold Medals in the Los Angeles 1984 and Seoul 1988 Olympics. This past year the HBO Documentary "Back on Board: Greg Louganis" was nominated for an Emmy Award for Best Sports Documentary. Next month, the Black Tie Dinner will present the Elizabeth Birch Equality Award to Greg in Dallas.
Louganis was in Rio de Janeiro for the recent Summer Games, where he served as a key commentator for Brazilian broadcaster Globo. Louganis has been a mentor to the US Diving Team, and also a big supporter of British diver Tom Daley, who he feels a special kinship with. "I'm honored to have this last dive at a facility that holds such a special place in my personal history, and equally thrilled to share the moment with Tom, an incredibly talent athlete for whom I have immense respect."
