
(ATR) Olympic sailor Felipe VI is the new King of Spain. A coronation ceremony was held for Felipe, 46, on Thursday.
He succeeds his father,Juan Carlos, who announced his abdication on June 2. Juan Carlos reigned for 39 years.
Juan Carlos and Felipe were members of Spain's sailing teams at the 1972 and 1992 Olympics.
They remained involved with Olympics following their competitive careers.
At the Barcelona 1992 Games, Felipe served as Spain's flagbearer at the Opening Ceremony. He was a torchbearer duringthe 2004 Olympic torch relay in Madrid.
The King and his wife, Letizia Ortiz, are routinely spotted in the stands during the Olympics.
Felipe was part of Madrid's 2020 Olympic bid, and Juan Carlos played an active role in Madrid's 2016 Olympic bid.
Spanish Olympic Committee president Alejandro Blanco presented King Felipe with the Orden Olimpica de Oro award in December 2013.
