Paris or LA? LA or Paris? The race for the 2024 Olympic Summer Games is too close to call, according the Around the Rings editor Ed Hula.
The first edition of the Around the Rings Olympic Bid Power Index puts the two cities in a near-tie. One of them tops the other by just one point -- 85 to 84 out of a possible 100. The Index will be released Sunday, April 2, ahead of the SportAccord Convention in Aarhus, Denmark.
"There are notable differences between the two, but the capacity of either city to stage the Games easily is almost without question," Hula says.
The decision will be made at the 130th IOC Session in Lima, Peru, on Sept. 13.
Around the Rings expects to issue at least two more editions of the Power Index ahead of the vote.
What could change?
Hula says the French presidential election and efforts by the U.S. President on behalf of Los Angeles could influence the numbers.
"U.S. President Donald Trump is said to be fully supporting the Los Angeles bid. But the politics of the Trump presidency, especially regarding immigration policy, could undercut that effort," he explained.
"The situation in France is clouded with the uncertainty of a presidential election in May, just before the visit of the IOC Evaluation Commission. IOC members seem to think that a victory by National Front candidate Marine Le Pen could complicate things for the bid, especially if she takes a harsh view of current French immigration policies."
