(ATR) Olympian Andy Murray tweeted out his excitement over the Scottish independence vote on Thursday.

"Huge day for Scotland today," Murray said. "No campaign negativity last few days totally swayed my view on it.

"Excited to see the outcome. Let's do this!"

The vote could cost Team GB a significant amount of its medal haul should Scotland become an independent country.

According to a review conducted by Around the Rings, 12 Scottish athletes competed for Team GB at the 2012 Summer Games. Of the 65 medals Team GB won in London, 14 were won by Scottish athletes or teams with Scottish players.

Half of Team GB's medals in Sochi came from Scots. The men's and women's curling teams, which won silver and bronze respectively, were entirely made up of Scots.

Last week, the IOC announced that Scottish athletes will be free to compete at the 2016 Summer Games should Scotland vote in favor of independence.Experts predict that if Scotland votes to break away from the UK, it will not be able to secure IOC recognition in time for the 2016 Games.

If the country votes for independence from the UK, the IOC will decide whether Team Scotland will compete under the Scottish flag or as a "de facto Scots team under the Olympic flag."

Election are expected to be announced later Thursday.
