OCA Press Release: Asian Games broadcasters check out key GBK venues

Jakarta, Indonesia, November 15, 2017: The second day of the first World Broadcasters’ Meeting for the 18th Asian Games in Indonesia next year included a venue tour to three key stadiums within the Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) sports complex in downtown Senayan on Wednesday afternoon.

After a day of presentations and question and answer sessions on Tuesday at the Jakarta Convention Centre, the representatives from 16 broadcasting organisations were taken to GBK – which will be the focal point of the 18th Asian Games from August 18 to September 2 in 2018. The co-host city is Palembang, capital of South Sumatra and a one-hour flight from Jakarta.

The venue tour started at the GBK Main Stadium, which was built for the 4th Asian Games in 1962 and will stage the opening ceremony on August 18, closing ceremony on September 2 and the athletics competition.

The delegates were shown around by representatives of host broadcaster IGBS and by organising committee INASGOC and checked the placing of TV cameras, commentary positions and other logistical issues connected with their coverage as rights-holding broadcasters.

The athletics competition will take place over six days from August 25-30 and offers 48 gold medals.

Next up was the Aquatic Centre, which has undergone a remarkable and rapid transformation to be able to host one of the most important events of any multi-sport games – swimming, along with diving, synchronised swimming and water polo. Swimming will begin the day after the opening ceremony, and run for six days from August 19-24.

Diving, with China expecting a tough challenge from rising Malaysia, will take place from August 28 to September 1, with synchro from August 27-29 and water polo from August 16 to September 1.

The last port of call was GBK Istora, which will host the badminton from August 23 to September 1. Badminton will be one of the most keenly contested - and supported - sports, with China, Malaysia, Korea, India and Japan all aiming for glory in the home of one of Indonesia’s most popular sports.

The three-day World Broadcasters’ meeting will conclude on Thursday with individual meetings and more venue inspections.
