(ATR) The head of the Olympic Council of Asia evaluation commission for the 2030 Asian Games comes away pleased after his team's three-day visit to Doha, Qatar.
Andrey Kryulov says "with great satisfaction" that the Qatari bid's "comprehensive plan" leaves him confident that should Doha win the bid it would "continue the legacy" of the Asian Games.
The Doha 2030 Bid Committee showcased the city’s potential as host of the Games during a three day visit that ended on Friday.
Doha is promising to deliver certainty, sustainability and excellence for all of Asia. The fact that the country, which hosted the 2006 Asian Games and will host the 2022 FIFA World Cup, does not need to build any permanent venues leaves more time for planning the best Games possible.
Doha 2030 argues the resources and funds usedfor construction can instead go toward NOC legacy programs to help with Covid-19 relief.
"This year has been defined by uncertainty, which is why the sports movement needs certainty nowmore than ever," Doha 2030 CEO and Qatar Olympic Committee Secretary General Jassim Bin Rashid Al Buenain said.
"Doha 2030 can do more than just offer certainty, we can say with absolute confidence that we will deliver the excellence that OCA and Asia’s NOCs deserve, in a sustainable and responsible manner. We can say this because all of our proposed permanent venues already exist, and the majority of these world-class facilities have already successfully hosted many international or continental events.
With this experience also comes knowledge in delivering the all-important Games-services that are critical to successfully staging major events. Our certainty of excellence, will allow us to focus our attention on minimizing our impact on the environment and contributing to a stronger future for Asia before and after 2030."
Throughout the OCA’S three day visit, the Evaluation Committee toured various sports venues as well as Al Bidda tower, home of the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.
The Evaluation Committee was also presented with Doha 2030’s sustainability strategy. Doha 2030 aims to deliver a
carbon-neutral event with a legacy of the most eco-friendly Asian Games held.
Kryukov and the nine member OCA evaluation commission arrived in Doha from an inspection visit to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, which is the other city vying for the bid. While Doha has hosted the 2006 Asian Games, Saudi Arabia has yet to hold the event.
The two countries have been in a diplomatic row for several years, adding another level of tension to the bidding.
The evaluation team does not have a lot of time to complete its reports on the dueling bids.
The OCA general assembly is scheduled to choose a host city on December 16.
