Interim ANOC Chief Calls for Unity
Sheikh Ahmad al Fahad al Sabah, interim president of the Association of National Olympic Committees, calls for "unity, solidarity and cooperation" at the upcoming ANOC General Assembly.
Following a highly contentious past few months regarding leadership plans for the umbrella body of NOCs, Sheikh Ahmad was recently tapped to lead ANOC for the remainder of former president Mario Vazquez Rana’s term, expiring in 2014.
"The Executive Council and members of ANOC must show unity, solidarity and cooperation, and work together with the National Olympic Committees and with the International Federations," the Kuwait IOC member said in a statement.
"We will serve the Olympic Movement according to the Olympic Charter and we are open and transparent in welcoming any suggestions, recommendations and proposals on the way forward. Whatever the majority decides will be followed."
He added: "It is a great honour and a privilege for me personally and for the Olympic sports family in Asia in general to be appointed Interim President of ANOC."
"I would like to place on record my sincere appreciation and thanks for the work and dedication of Mr Mario Vazquez Rana over many years. I would also like to thank the Executive Council for showing unity in this time of need."
The ANOC General Assembly is scheduled for April 10 to 18 in Moscow.
BOA Visits Sochi 2014 Venues
British Olympic Association delegates say Sochi 2014 preparations are on track after a five-day tour of the city’s Olympic sites and venues.
"As an NOC, you’re looking to ensure the athletes have the very best venues and facilities to allow them to deliver their best performance," said an unnamed BOA official in a Sochi 2014 statement. "From what we have seen in Sochi this week, our athletes will benefit from a trulyworld class environment."
The delegation visited the Olympic Villagealong with the venues for several sports including skating, curling, cross country skiing, ski jumping and snowboarding.
The BOA and the Russian Olympic Committee recently signed an agreement ensuring that the two organizations will cooperate on Olympic preparations.
Ukraine Olympic Team
The Ukraine National Olympic Committee says its London Olympic team could be as big as 220 athletes.
A UNOC report of the March 22 press conference says 187 Ukrainians in 18 sports have already qualified for the Games with as many as 210 to 220 on the team when qualifying ends in May.
"In the final stage of Olympic preparations it is important to combine efforts and provide all necessary conditions for full implementation of what is planned" UNOC president Sergey Bubka said at the press conference.
"NOC of Ukraine completely fulfills its commitment to a worthy represent Ukraine at the Olympics in London."
ONOC Secretary General Visit
Ricardo Blais, secretary general of the Oceania National Olympic Committees, will visit the Solomon Islands National Olympic Committee from March 28 to 30.
According to media reports, the main purpose of the visit is to discuss sport development with the country’s national federations.
