No Barcelona for 2022

Barcelona will not bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics.

The decision will be officially announced by Barcelona mayor Xavier Trias on Friday, according to Spanish newspaper SPORT.

Trias had been noncommittal on an Olympic decision as recent as last week, but in reality, "the decision had already been made days before and will be made official on Friday," said Trias to SPORT.

Alberto Fernandez Diaz, president of the People’s Party in Barcelona’s city council, said he would not support a Barcelona 2022 bid. The original idea for a 2022 bid came from former Barcelona mayor Jordi Hereu.

Trias had said a bid would only be supported with a broad political consensus.

WADA to Audit Jamaica

The world’s anti-doping body will launch what it calls an "extraordinary" audit of Jamaica’s drug testing program.

The move comes after Renee Anne Shirley, the former executive director of the Jamaican Anti-Doping Commission (JADCO), provided information to the media indicating that testing was nearly nonexistent leading up to last summer’s Olympics in London.

"There was a period of - and forgive me if I don’t have the number of months right - but maybe five to six months during the beginning part of 2012 where there was no effective operation," WADA director general David Howman told the AP.

WADA calls the matter a "high priority," but doesn’t expect to conduct an inspection before the end of the year due to JADCO’s lack of cooperation.

France Chooses Flag Bearer

Olympic Nordic combined skier Jason Lamy Chappuis will carry France’s flag at the opening ceremony for the 2014 Winter Olympics.

"I'm very proud to represent France's colors," Lamy Chappuis said in a statement to the press.

In March, Lamy Chappuis took home three gold medals at the International Ski Federation Nordic World Championships. At the 2010 Vancouver Games he won gold in the individual normal hill event.

Olympic biathlete Vincent Defrasne last carried the flag for France at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Contenders this year included figure skater Brian Joubert and freestyle skier Ophelie David.

The opening ceremony for the 2014 Sochi Games takes place on February 7.
