The National Hockey League will participate in the 2006 Turin and 2010 Vancouver Olympics as part a new collective bargaining agreement, which ended the league's season-long lockout.
One of the provisions in the agreement calls for NHL players to play for their respective countries in the Winter Olympics. In each of the Olympic years, the league's All-Star game will not be played. The players opted for the Olympics because they did not want to take a second extended break in the season.
That means the 2006 All-Star Game, which was set for Phoenix, has been cancelled. It was the second city in two years to lose the event. Atlanta lost the event in 2005, but hopes to host it in 2008. Phoenix hopes to get the All-Star Game by 2009.
The league still needs ratification from the IIHF before the Olympic participation become official.
