(ATR) A surge in new members from Africa brings fresh voices from the continent with the addition of a dozen new members in seven years. Gold medal athletes, a leading banker, a filmmaker and a number of women are enriching the membership of the IOC from Africa.

Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe chairs the IOC Athletes Commission and leads the way in Senegal as chair of the coordination commission for the 2022 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar. Because of the relationships she is building as Zimbabwe's minister of youth and sport, the IOC might want to find a permanent seat for her when her term on the Athletes Commission ends in 2021.

Olympian Paul Tergat is president of the Kenya NOC and is serving on two key commissions, Entourage and Audit.

Anant Singh of South Africa has been tappedto lead the IOC Communications Commission. The filmmaker joined the IOC in 2017.

Dagmawit Girmay Berhane is former president of the Ethiopia NOC. She’s one of 12 IOC members from Africa named since 2013, the year she joined the IOC. In addition to the Paris 2024 CoComm, Berhane is on the Finance Commission.

It will be interesting to see which commission assignments fall to Tidjane Thiam. A native of Cote d’Ivoire, Thiam was elected in 2019 for his business connections. He’s CEO and chair of Credit Suisse, Switzerland’s second-largest bank.
