(ATR) - Government officials say traffic volume in the center of Athens could be cut as much as 10 percent with this week's opening of the final link in a new ring road that allows traffic to bypass the city.

Another segment of the Attiki Odos highway opened just weeks ago has cut by at least one-third the travel time between the airport and city, 35 km apart.

The new roadway is considered an essential part of the transport plan for Athens 2004. Reduced traffic in the city center is needed to keep official and spectator transport running smoothly.
