Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: 25th March 2013: The new Rio 2016™ and Municipal Olympic Company (EOM in Portuguese) Headquarters, which were officially opened on Monday 11 March, were the first venue delivered for the Rio 2016™ Olympic and Paralympic Games to have an emergency drill this Monday, 25th March. The activity is part of the building's Integrated Security Plan that adopts all the security protocols of the sports and non-sports venues that will be used during the Games.

The objective of the exercise was to test the new Headquarters Emergency and Evacuation Plan's efficiency together with the Public Safety, Civil Defence and Urban Development Agencies. Employees of both companies were trained to take part in the voluntary brigade that will assist the Rio 2016™ Fire Brigade. The volunteers received fire fighting and fire prevention training, as well as theoretical and practical first aid lessons.

Carlos Arthur Nuzman, President of the Organising Committee for the Rio 2016™ Olympic and Paralympic Games, commented on the drill's importance: "Safety is one of our top priorities and this concern begins with our headquarters. This drill is the first in a series of safety tests that we will conduct regularly from now until Games time in order to ensure the safety of all venues," he explains.

The Area Escape and Evacuation Simulation Action uses the building's Emergency Plan that defines the actions to be taken by Rio 2016™ and the Municipal Olympic Company employees during the operation; the Rio de Janeiro State Military Fire Department (CBMERJ in Portuguese) Operations Plan that defines the actions of the Fire Brigade’s General Command Operational Group (GOCG in Portuguese), the region’s main responsible fire station; and the Security and Urban Development Integrated Plan (PISOU in Portuguese) that is dedicated to the new Rio 2016™ Headquarters and includes the actions agreed by the agencies involved in the process.
