(ATR) A new executive headed by Ciro Solano Hurtado is now leading the Colombian Olympic Committee, which for 12 years was successfully chaired by Baltazar Medina.

In a statement, the COC noted that Medina is leaving office after serving three terms during which he "allowed the sports and academic development of Olympism in Colombia".

The elections were celebrated in person "complying with strict biosafety protocols" according to the COC.

Medina is the current president of the Organizing Committee of the I Pan American Junior Games Cali 2021 that will take place next September and president of the Bolivarian Sports Organization (ODEBO). He is also a member of the Executive Commissions of Panam Sports and of the South American Sports Organization.

As the head of COC Medina he was a key piece in the sports development of his country and in the organization of numerous international competitions such as the World Games in Cali 2013 and the Central American and Caribbean Games in Barranquilla 2018.

Solano was also an important part of those projects as secretary general of the COC throughout Medina's period and in the last term of Andrés Botero. Solano is part of the Executive Committee of Centro Caribe Sports.

Solano assumed the presidency, after being nominated by the Weightlifting, Softball, Soccer, Baseball, Surfing, Boxing, Sailing, Shuffleboard and Athletics Federations. He was the only candidate in the elections. He won the vote 48-0 plus three virtual votes for him.

Solano will be accompanied by a team with "great experience and extensive experience" with representatives from Federations such as swimming, weightlifting, archery, sailing, volleyball, wrestling, handball, boxing, cycling and taekwondo, among others.

The new executive body of the Colombian Olympic Committee for the period 2021-2024 was established as follows:

President: Ciro Solano Hurtado. First Vice President: José Luis Echeverry Azcárate. Second Vice President: Irma Lucía Ruíz Gutiérrez.

General Secretary: Ana Edurne Camacho Corredor. Treasurer: Rafael Lloreda Currea. Members: Fanny Echeverry Zuluaga, Juan Luis Zapata Fuscaldo, Helmut Bellingrodt Wolff and Jorge Mauricio Vargas Carreño.

The new president of the COC was appointed as vice president of the National Athletics Federation in 1989 and later assumed the presidency of that institution for 16 years.

Solano's work at the COC began 18 years ago and he has been head of missions for Colombian delegations in sports competitions, including the Olympic Games in Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio de Janeiro 2016.
