(ATR) The International University Sport Federation (FISU) says that the bidding process for the 2019 Summer Universiade has been reopened.
Brasilia, Brazil was awarded hosting rights to the Games in November 2013, but pulled out of hosting in December 2014 when Rodrigo Rollemberg took over as governor for the Brazilian Federal District.
Rollemberg said growing costs and an inability to honor a $27.4 million payment to FISU required by each host city.
FISU said in a release they were informed of the decision on Dec. 19.
FISU said that the Brazil minister of sports and the president of the National University Sport Federation of Brazil was looking into alternative cities to keep the Games in Brazil for 2019.
The FISU Executive Council will discuss the next steps at its meeting in February in Granada, Spain.
"Some candidates have already expressed their interest in hosting the Games," FISU said in a release.
"As to the other consequences of Brasilia’s decision, FISU will discuss the matter with all interested parties in Brazil in order to find a satisfactory solution."
Baku, Azerbaijan and Budapest, Hungary expressed interest in hosting the 2019 Games, but withdrew their bids before a decision was reached by FISU.
