The Franz Liszt International Airport in Budapest yesterday announced the laying of a time capsule for a new airport hotel with direct terminal access.

"With the new airport hotel, we continue to enhance the profile of Budapest Airport and strengthen our competitiveness in the region. The record two-digit growth of the last few years, which also continues this year, makes the timely implementation of this hotel project even more crucial," said Jost Lammers, CEO of the airport.

The new Accor-operated hotel is part of a $182-million airport development programme known as Bud 2020.

The first phase of this development is due to complete in 2020 in time for the UEFA European Championships, during which Budapest will host three group games and one round of 16.It includes increased check-in desks, enhanced security facilities, and a direct rail link to the city centre.

The second development phase will conclude by 2024, ensuring that it will already be in use should Budapest win the right to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games after Tokyo. This phase will include a new airplane pier, a multi-level parking facility and the expansion of the passenger plane apron area.

The airport, named after the famous 19th Century Hungarian Composer, is home to 44 airlines, which transported 10.3 million passengers to 95 airports in 36 countries last year. It is owned by a consortium of Canadian and Singaporean investors. WING zrt, the hotel building investor, is also responsible for landmark building throughout the country, including the Hungarian Nobel Prize Winners R&D park, and the first environmentally-friendly shopping centre in the country.

Last weekend, Budapest’s airport also staged "the air transport industry’s annual premier charity sporting event": Runway Run 4.0.

Around 1,000 aviation industry staff competed for a series of titles including "The Fastest Airline in the World."

Qatar Airways was the main airline sponsor of this year’s event, joining main sponsor Airbus which has supported the event since its inception. The sponsorship move follows Qatar’s intensifying interest at Budapest Airport where it recently raised frequencies from daily to ten times per week.

Budapest 2024 has strong links to the Franz Liszt and several staff members rose to the Runway Run challenge. Two Hungarian Olympians were also there to set the pace at the event and join in the fun. Gabriella Szabó and Kinga Bóta, both Olympic medal-winning sprint canoers, ran with the Budapest 2024 entrants.

Lammers thanked the participants for a great turn out on the day of the race. "We are very proud of all our competitors for their part in making this a record-attended runway run," he said. "Close to 1,000 runners from across the international aviation community took part helping to promote our airport and this fantastic city while allowing us to donate 100% of entrance fees to the benefiting charities. This event is firmly and truly established as a winning formula for all."

All entry fees are donated to the bone marrow transplant charity, Anthony Nolan, and Hungary’s Suhanj! Foundation, a charity which supports the inclusion of disabled people in sport. Many of Hungary’s Paralympic team left the airport in Budapest headed for Rio on the day of the Runway Run.
