Rain Hits Sochi; Olympic Inspection Not Affected
Heavy rains may have flooded streets in Sochi but the weather has not affected this week’s IOC Coordination Commission visit. The commission is making its last trip before the Olympics next February.
The twelve commission members, headed by Jean-Claude Killy, began their three-day visit Tuesday.
Sochi 2014 CEO Dmitry Chernyshenko says the IOC group inspected mountain venues Wednesday without any trouble.
"It has stopped raining now. Although the weather conditions in Sochi were exceptional, it has not impacted the visit of the IOC coordination commission," says Chernyshenko.
"The commission's work is ongoing and we have just completed a successful visit to the mountain venues," he says.
Torrential rains, which are starting to abate, have affected travel in the city on the Black Sea. Streets have been inundated but the flooding is receding according to reports from Sochi. Speaking on Russian TV, IOC member and Russian Olympic Committee president Alexander Zhukov said the bad weather would not affect preparations for the Sochi Olympics.
