Paralympics Open

London 2012’s intermission comes to an end Wednesday with the opening of the Paralympic Games.

After torch lightings in London, Belfast and then Edinburgh over the weekend, Cardiff joins the fray Monday before all four flames are taken Tuesday to Stoke Mandeville, the spiritual home of the Paralympic Movement.

There, they will be united during a special ceremony to create London 2012’s official Paralympic Flame.

A torch relay spanning 92 miles in 24 hours will conclude Wednesday night with the lighting of the cauldron in Olympic Stadium and a speech by Queen Elizabeth II to officially open the 2012 Paralympics.

Competition across 503 events in 20 sports begins Thursday and runs through Sept. 9 at many of the same venues used for the Olympics, plus a couple of purpose-built ones.

Around the Rings will be on the scene in London for the duration of the Games.

Mountain Bike World Champs

UCI’s mountain bike world championships run the following two weekends in Austria.

After qualifying rounds Friday, four cross finals are scheduled for Saturday and downhill finals for Sunday in the resort town of Leogang.

World championships in the cross-country, cross-country eliminator and time trial events follow Sept. 6 through 9 in Saalfelden.
