200-Days-to-Go Milestone
Monday marks 200 days to go until the 2012 Olympics.
Around the Rings will be on the scene in London as Games organizers and athletes alike are reminded how close they are to the lighting of the Olympic cauldron and the opening of the Games on July 27.
Innsbruck 2012 Opens
The first-ever Winter Youth Olympics take flight Friday in Innsbruck.
In the meantime, the last of 2,012 torch bearers are crisscrossing Austria en route to Bergisel Stadium for the opening ceremony.
More than 1,500 athletes ages 14-18 from 70 countries will compete across 15 winter sports disciplines in a total of 63 medal events, 14 of them featuring at an Olympics for the first time.
First up in Innsbruck is ice hockey beginning Friday. Medals are up for grabs Saturday in alpine skiing, speed skating and ski jump. Biathlon, curling, figure skating, freestyle skiing, luge, Nordic combined and snowboard also kick off over the weekend with bobsleigh, cross-country skiing, short track speed skating and skeleton reserved for the second week.
ATR will be on the scene throughout the duration of the Games.
Gymnastics Test Event
London’sbusy schedule of test events resumes this week with the Visa International Gymnastics beginning Tuesday at North Greenwich Arena.
The eight-day event doubles as the last chance for gymnasts to qualify for the 2012 Olympics.
Artistic action is first on the floor this week with trampoline to follow Friday and rhythmic routines after that.
2017 World Games
Thursday is decision day for the International World Games Association.
At the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, IWGA president Ron Froehlich will announce whether Budapest, Hungary; Cape Town, South Africa or Wroclaw, Poland will host the 2017 World Games.
Big Week for Rome 2020
Rome 2020 tells Around the Rings to expect several key announcements at a Wednesday press conference.
Mario Pescante, president of Rome 2020, is set to unveil the results of national, regional and local public opinion polls about the Olympic bid as well as report on Wednesday morning meetings with Prime Minister Mario Monti, representatives of the Italian Senate and the lower house of Italy's parliament.
