Olympic Flame Lighting

Around the Rings will be on the scene in Olympia for Thursday’s lighting of the Olympic flame.

As many as 5,000 spectators could turn out for the ceremony at the stadium once used for footraces in the early Games.

IOC president Jacques Rogge, leaders of the Hellenic Olympic Committee and London 2012 chair Sebastian Coe will speak prior to the lighting. English-born Greek swimmer Spyros Gianniotis will then begin the flame’s eight day, 1,800-mile journey through Greece before a May 18 transfer to LOCOG.

Stadium Test Event

The British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) Visa Outdoor Athletics Championships – the first test event for Olympic Stadium – wraps up Monday with around 1,500 athletes from 117 of the host country’s higher education institutions competing.

Ice Hockey World Champs

Helsinkiand Stockholm share hosting duties for the 2012 IIHF Men’s Ice Hockey World Championship underway this week. Group play runs through May 15 with the final scheduled for May 20.

Modern Pentathlon WC

More than 200 pentathletes from all six continents are in Rome for this week’s UIPM World Championships.Competition runs Monday through Sunday with the top three finishers not already qualified for the Games gaining direct entry to London 2012.

Boxing Qualifier

Continental qualifying for the Americas runs through May 13 in Rio de Janeiro with the final 38 men’s Olympic berths up for grabs at the Maracanazinho, boxing’s venue for Rio 2016.
