75 Years Since Berlin Olympics

Monday is the 75th anniversary of the opening of the 1936 Summer Olympics.

It’s in Berlin that Jesse Owens famously won gold in the 100m, 200m, 4x100m and long jump amidst the rise Adolf Hitler and his Nazi regime.

London Prepares for Rowing, Triathlon

London 2012’s busy schedule of test events resumes this week with the junior rowing world championships in Eton Dorney and a stop on the triathlon world championship series in Hyde Park.

Rowing runs Thursday through Sunday. Triathlon takes up the weekend only.

Tuesday Talk on Test Events

LOCOG director of sport Debbie Jevans tells Around the Rings recent Olympic test events indicate London is in store for a successful Summer Games.

Jevans spoke with ATR just ahead of last week’s year-to-go milestone about the ongoing London Prepares competition series.

"I’m confident that our planning has been absolutely diligent, and I value enormously the learnings that we’re taking from our test events," she said.

"I wouldn’t be arrogant enough in any shape or form to say we’re 100 percent ready now, but what I would say is a year before the Games, we’re exactly where we want to be."

Check back Tuesday for her take on test events in tennis, equestrian, road cycling and athletics as well as the challenges that lie ahead in this week’s edition of Tuesday Talk.

17th World Olympic Collectors Fair

Thousands of items will be bought, sold, traded and treasured at the World Olympic Collectors Fair running Wednesday through Sunday outside Chicago.

This is the show’s 17th staging but first in North America.

Organizers expect 80 to 100 tables to be booked by Olympic collectors from more than 15 countries, including Russia, China and Australia.

The special "Olympic Pavilion" will be near the entrance of the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center, also host of the concurrent National Sports Collectors Convention.

Around the Rings will be on the scene in Rosemont, as will World Olympians Association president Dick Fosbury and IOC member Gerhard Heiberg, chairman of the Olympic philately, numismatic and memorabilia commission.

Five Years to Rio 2016

Friday marks five years until the Rio Olympics.

The opening ceremony is scheduled for August 5, 2016 in Maracana Stadium, also site for the football final.

A program of events is planned for the day, Rio 2016 President Carlos Nuzman tells ATR.
