Minsk European Games Organising Committee (MEGOC) has issued a series of special postage stamps to mark the European Games.
The stamps were launched during a special cancellation ceremony, which was held at Minsk City Hall on 1 February. Designed by artist Marina Vitkovskaya, the series consists of four souvenir blocks of four stamps each, which depict the logo, slogan and pictograms of the 15 sports featuring at the Games.
"We consider them not only as a postal payment tool but primarily as a means to advertise the multi-sport event," MEGOC CEO George Katulin said. "Very soon these stamps will reach out all corners of Europe heralding the start of the big sport event in Minsk in June."
The event also featured Belarus’ Deputy Sport and Tourism Minister Alexander Baraulya and First Deputy Minister of Communications and Informatization Dmitry Shedko.
However, the Star of the event was European Games mascot Lesik the Baby Fox, who sent the first invitations with the new stamps to the National Olympic Committees of the participating countries.
Each stamp is a piece of art created by Belarusian designers and has a circulation of 120,000 copies. Their special release for the Games continues the tradition of marking important events in the life of the country with stamps.
