Georgia Eyes Winter Olympic Bid

In a case of keeping up with the neighbors, a Georgian parliamentarian said Friday his country should follow Russia’s lead with a bid to host the Winter Olympics.

Russia will host its first Winter Games in February in Sochi, near the border with Georgia, who had a failed bid to land the 2014 Olympics for the town of Borjomi.

"In a few years’ time, we will have amazing opportunities to host the Olympic Games," said Georgy Topadze, a member of Georgia’s parliamentary committee for sport and youth policy. "In the future we can be competitive against many countries in this field."

The earliest Georgia could hope to host the Winter Olympics is 2022, for which applications must be entered by November 14. The Caucasus country could not host the Summer Olympics until 2024.
