MERS-free Gwangju welcomes the world for 2015 Summer Universiade

On June 25, Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn held a meeting at the government complex in Seoul to discuss government measures to support the 2015 Summer Universiade in Gwangju, Republic of Korea.

Gwangju Universiade Organizing Committee President and Gwangju Metropolitan City Mayor Yoon Jang-hyun delivered a brief report about the current preparation status. Preparations for transportation, competition operation, venues, accommodation, safety and security are complete and the organizing committee is on games-time operation mode.

The government and Gwangju Universiade Organizing Committee (GUOC) are committed to protect all participants and visitors from the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS). So far, there are no confirmed cases or suspected patients in Gwangju. The GUOC and the central government are taking safety and security measures seriously to keep Gwangju a MERS-free environment.

During the games, the organizing committee will establish special clinics with top-notch physicians to serve not only athletes but also tourists visiting the city. In addition, the World Health Organization and the International University Sports Federation Medical Committee will be on-site around the clock to make sure all participants and visitors are safe from the virus.

"The 2015 Gwangju Summer Universiade is an opportunity to show our crisis management skills after the MERS outbreak", said Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn.
