LAUSANNE – Colombia’s dream of bringing the 2018 Youth Olympic Games to Medellín, the City of Eternal Spring, came one step closer to reality today as the Medellín 2018 bid team submitted its Candidature File to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Lausanne after holding a public ceremony in Medellín last week celebrating the completion of the dossier and launching an initiative for citizens to personally share their dreams of hosting the Games.

A delegation from Medellín 2018, headed by Bid Chief Executive Juan Camilo Quintero Medina, was in Lausanne to ensure the dossier, guarantees, photographic files and other bid documents were presented to the IOC. Mr. Quintero stated, "We believe the strong technical documentation and the concrete guarantees we submitted today will give IOC members and future YOG competitors the confidence that Medellín can host excellent, unique Youth Olympic Games in 2018. The entire government and its institutions have provided more than 170 guarantees as part of their commitment to stage the Games in Medellín."

In addition to meeting all the technical requirements of the IOC, the Candidature File details the transformation of Medellín over the past decade into a vibrant, safe city which offers event hosting capability and sport participation for all citizens in modern, sustainable venues.

Back home in Medellín, Mayor Anibal Gaviria Correa reflected the support the bid has amongst residents of Medellin, saying, "The entire city wishes we could personally go to Lausanne to cheer for the submission of the dossier, but we know our Candidature File will convey to the IOC what a perfect fit Medellín is for the Youth Olympic Games. We dream of sharing our success through staging compact, exciting Youth Olympic Games in a city which has been transformed by sport."

The Mayor symbolically received the dossier in a celebration on Sunday, 7 October 2012, where hundreds of residents turned out to support the bid. At the event held in the Atanasio Girardot sports complex, one of the major proposed YOG venue sites, a special box was unveiled in which residents of Medellín are encouraged to deposit their personal messages of support and aspiration for hosting the Games. Boxes will be placed throughout Medellín to ensure the entire community can share their Olympic dreams.
