More than 1,400 McDonald’s restaurants in Canada will be dressed up in Olympic designs. The features include posters of Canadian athletes, snowboarders Brad Martin and Crispin Lipscomb, freestyle skier Alexandre Bilodeau and former Olympian Cassie Campbell.

Restaurants will feature items such as Happy Meal toys that include the Olympic mascots Miga, Quatchi and Sumi and new dipping sauces named Spicy Szechwan and Zesty Mango that are intended to represent the “worldwide appeal of the Olympics.”

“While the eyes of the world will be turned to Vancouver and Whistler, Canadians from all parts of the country will be eager to embrace the unifying power of the Olympics and they are sure to feel the spirit of the Games as soon as they walk through the door of any of more than 1,400 restaurants nationwide,” John Betts, President of McDonald’s Canada said.

Other Vancouver plans include having flat-screen televisions showing Olympic broadcasts in Vancouver area locations. McDonald’s workers will also wear red shirts with the Olympic logo.

Acer Releases Olympics Notebooks

Computer maker Acer is releasing Olympics special edition notebooks and LCD ahead of the 2010 Vancouver Games.

The special edition laptops will have the Olympic rings on four models.

Acer has been a TOP sponsor of the Olympics since January.

It will provide about 6,500 pieces of computing equipment and more than 100 technicians and engineers for the Games.

Omega Confirms Vancouver Celebrity Guests

TOP sponsor Omega has confirmed that supermodel Cindy Crawford and Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps are among its celebrity guests in Vancouver. Michael Phelps is among Omega’s celebrity guest for Vancouver 2010.

Crawford will be the guest at an event at the Omega boutique in the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver Feb. 14.

Phelps will appear at the boutique Feb. 18.

Other celebrity guests include NASA astronaut Buzz Aldrin, actor George Clooney, actress Nicole Kidman, 10 "royals" and 25 government heads.

Atos Origin Awarded Sustainability Star

TOP sponsor Atos Origin has won a Sustainability Star for its efforts to make the 2010 Winter Olympics “greener” Games.

Atos Origin is the IT partner for the Olympics and developed technology solutions that will help decrease the carbon footprint left by the 2010 games.

“Technology has a key role to play in helping all organizations save energy, minimize use of natural resources and reduce carbon emissions,” Patrick Adiba, Atos Origin’s Executive Vice President for Olympic Games, said.

“The Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games are a great example of some of the possibilities.”

U.S. Speedskating’s New Sponsor Graces SI Cover

Stephen Colbert, U.S. Speedskating’s rescue sponsor, appears on the cover of the latest Sports Illustrated wearing an Olympic speed skating uniform.

Colbert came to rescue of U.S. Speedskating after it faced a $300,000deficit when Dutch bank, DSB, filed for bankruptcy. He became an official sponsor and “The Colbert Nation” has raised more than $250,000.

Colbert also has accepted an offer to be the Olympic Oval Ombudsman. As an ombudsman, Colbert will observe the treatment of international speed skaters to ensure it’s fair.

The city of Richmond’s offer came after Colbert criticized the Richmond Olympic Oval for not allowing U.S. Speedskating to practice at the oval before the Vancouver Games.

…Sega will broadcast 30 and 20-second ads as part of its Vancouver 2010 marketing campaign. The ads will broadcast during coverage of the Games. Sega is the official Olympic videogame.

…Nike second-quarter profits were less than expected. Although profits were less than analysts’ estimates, future orders have risen four percent from last year.

…Sunkist will begin a Canadian trading card program next month ahead of the Vancouver Olympics, according to Sports Business Journal. The cards will include 10 players who may be on the Canadian Olympic team.
