(ATR) - Mark McCormack, the founder of IMG, one of the most important sports marketing companies in the world has died in New York.
He had been hospitalized since January when he suffered a cardiac arrest.
McCormack founded his company in Cleveland in the 1960's where he was practicing law. His first client was golf great Arnold Palmer. Soon after he was representing Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player and since then International Management Group has built a roster of athletes and performing artists that stretches across all areas of sport. Tiger Woods may now be IMG's most famous client.
In the Olympic arena, skier Jean Claude Killy was IMG's first big catch. IMG's work with Olympic sponsors through the years IMG's Olympic division based in New York represents the U.S. Olympic Committee.
The companies under the IMG umbrella also include London-based Trans World International, which runs OTAB, the Olympic Television Archives Bureau. IMG has 85 offices in 33 countries.
McCormack appeared near or at the top of surveys ranking the most important people in the world of sport.
He was a man who enjoyed his work, refusing to consider retirement, involved with all aspects of IMG's business until he was stricken in January.
He is survived by his wife and four children. A memorial service is planned for New York on May 21.
