(ATR) International Weightlifting Federation President Tamas Ajan faces six other candidates in the biggest challenge since his first election in 2000.

Ajan, 78, is one of the seven names certified for the ballot at the IWF general assembly May 29-30 in Bangkok, Thailand.

Challengers to Ajan come from around the globe: Italy, Qatar, Philippines, Iran, China and Romania.

Another incumbent, general secretary Atilla Adamfi, has drawn five challengers.

The ballot is a bewildering list of candidates that numbers to more than 200 names for election to vice presidential slots, executive board and various committees.

Some familiar names on the list include Sam Coffa, denizen of the sport in Australia and Jose Quinones of Peru, ostensibly president of the Peruvian Olympic Committee. Greek Olympic gold medalist Pyrros Dimas is running for an executive board seat as is John Dawanincura, veteran secretary general of the Papua New Guinea National Olympic Committee.

The election comes amid a steady stream of positive drug tests from Olympic Games retesting from 2008 and 2012. Since the IOC began retesting samples from those two Games, 48 weightlifting competitors have been flagged for positive results for doping.

The first female vice president is expected to be elected by IWF delegates, with three women on the ballot.
