Plaza de Cibeles, a popular Madrid landmark. (ATR)(ATR) Fame and a cash prize awaits the winner of a contest to design a logo for the Madrid 2016 Olympics bid.

Official rules of the contest will be published this week and will be open to all Madrillenos.

Speaking at a press conference Mayor Alberto Ruiz Gallardon said the new bid will include citizen participation as “one of the bid's cornerstones”.

"We all feel very proud of the hard work that was put into the previous bid, this new project is different and new, so we are going to work even harder with the hope that, in October 2009 in Copenhagen, the City of Madrid will be awarded the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games".

The competition was announced Monday following a meeting the Madrid 16 foundation board, the first since the Spanish Olympic Committee endorsed the Madrid candidacy at the end of May.

Madrid 16 CEO Mercedes Coghen says the contest will serve to build public interest.

"We all feel very excited about this announcement, because it is a wonderful way of being visible in the streets of Madrid".

She say ten designs will be selected from the entries and that a popular vote will choose three finalists.

A Madrid Mayor Alberto Ruiz Gallardon. (ATR)jury of professionals and staff from the bid will then select a finalist.

A cash prize of 30,000 euros will go to the winning design.

A press release from Madrid 16 says “the designs must be inspired in the fact that Madrid's Olympic Games would be based on the social integration and coexistence of the different cultures and countries”.

In other comments, Coghen says members of the Madrid team have already made 17 trips and have contacted 51 IOC members “to explain to them what Madrid is and why we deserve the Olympic Games".

Still lacking an internet site, Coghen says "We are deciding the creation of our website, which is going to be very interactive and is going to show that Madrid is a multicultural city that lives sport with passion”.

Madrid has yet to formally apply to the IOC for the 2016 race, but that step is expected now that the Spanish NOC has endorsed the bid. So far, Tokyo is the only city to have lodged its application with the IOC ahead of the September 13 deadline.
