Before making the trip to Argentina on 7 September, Madrid 2020 is jetting off to Moscow with the Spain team for the 14th IAAF World Championships, which take place in the Russian capital on 10-18 August.

The first 25 members of the 40-strong team, which is made up of 30 male and ten female athletes, left for Moscow from Madrid’s Barajas Airport today, waving the Madrid 2020 flag as they bade farewell to fans and reporters. Over the next few days we hope to see the bid flag flying high at the Luzhniki Stadium in celebration of the team’s success.

Before setting off the athletes gave their solid support to Madrid as it enters the final straight of the Olympic race, among them the walker Julia Takacs: "I’ve got a lot of confidence in the bid because they’re doing a really good job. I think Madrid will come out on top on 7 September."

Referring to the recent FINA World Championships in Barcelona, Spain’s national discus record holder Mario Pestano said: "When it comes to organising things, Spain is more than capable. Getting the Games would be amazing."

Also travelling to Moscow in representation of the Madrid 2020 Bid are its President, Alejandro Blanco, International CEO Theresa Zabell, and General-Director of Sport Raul Chapado, who will once again be explaining the project in detail to the International Olympic Committee members attending the World Championships.

Just before boarding the plane to Moscow, Theresa Zabell stated, "We are setting to the IAAF World Championships full of excitement. It is a great opportunity to see and talk with the IOC members at the same time as we enjoy watching the best athletes. Athletics is the heart and soul of the Olympic and Paralympic Games and I can’t imagine a more appropriate environment to transmit our excellent Madrid 2020 project."
