Loyola Marymount University’s (LMU) student government has endorsed LA 2024, underscoring polling that shows that 88% of LA millennials support bringing the Olympic and Paralympic Games back to the City of Angels for the first time in a generation. Coming on the heels of similar endorsements from UCLA and USC, student governments representing more than 60,000 young Angelenos have now declared their support for LA 2024.
The endorsement underscores LA 2024’s enduring commitment to furthering Olympic Agenda 2020’s 23rd recommendation to engage with youth, and its overarching goal of strengthening Olympism in society.
The Associated Students of Loyola Marymount University (ASLMU)’s resolution cited the benefit the Games would provide young people in terms of inspiring the next generation of athletes, which LA 2024 plans to achieve by leveraging the City of Angels’ unparalleled culture of creativity and entertainment. The resolution also praised LA 2024’s commitment to using existing facilities to position the Olympic and Paralympic Movements at the forefront of global sustainability, citing perfect alignment with LMU’s "long-standing tradition of environmental responsibility."
ASLMU Attorney General and current LMU student Adrian Narayan said: "The student government of LMU is thrilled to support LA’s bid to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2024. We believe the Games have the power to unite our city and leave behind a powerful legacy that inspires future generations. The city's wealth of existing infrastructure and experience with hosting global sporting events allows it to deliver low-risk, sustainable Games in 2024."
LA 2024 Community Manager Joslyn Treece said: "ASLMU’s endorsement reinforces our belief that LA 2024 is the right choice to help the Olympic and Paralympic Movements engage with young adults around the world. I’d like to thank LMU students for their support and enthusiasm for our bid and for their conviction in the power of the Games to make our city and the world a better place. LA’s youth is ready to be inspired by the greatest celebration of sport on the planet - the Olympic and Paralympic Games - and we at LA 2024 are eager to make their dreams come true."
The LMU student government’s endorsement is the latest show of support for LA 2024 from the the generation born between 1982 and 1997, commonly referred to as "millennials." The largest generation in American history, counting 75.4 million, or nearly a quarter of the population, millennials are considered a priority demographic for the sports industry due to its size and influence on the market. LA 2024 plans to leverage the City of Angels’ thriving entertainment and technology sectors to engage this audience and develop a new generation of Olympic and Paralympic enthusiasts.
