Equestrian Qualifier Cancelled

The field for London 2012’s equestrian eventing competition will wait to take shape after bad weather forced the cancellation of this week’s Badminton Horse Trials.

"The recent exceptional rainfall has left the ground at Badminton totally waterlogged and partially flooded," British Eventing said Monday in a statement on its website. "Further rain is due this week, leaving no chance of the ground drying out."

The annual contest, one of horse sport’s most prestigious, was scheduled to begin Thursday in Gloucestershire and would have served as a key qualifier for the Summer Olympics.

U. S. Archers Take Aim

Seven archers are set to represent Team USA at the 2012 Paralympics.

Jeff Fabry, Matt Stutzman and Dugan Denton (men’s compound open) will be joined in London by Jerry Shields (men’s W1 compound), Eric Bennett and Lee Ford (standing recurve) and Russell Wolfe (men’s W2 recurve).

The selections were made following a trials process at U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California.

Asian Rowers Bound for London

Japanese rower Daisaku Takeda will compete in his fifth straight Summer Games after booking his berth at Asia’s Olympic Qualification Regatta.

His country won three of the four gold medals on offer over the weekend at Tangeum Lake in Chungju, Korea, including lightweight men’s double, lightweight women’s double and women’s single skulls.

Sawarn Singh of India won men’s single sculls, upping the number of Asian boats added last week to 17.

One final Olympic Qualification Regatta remains ahead of the Games and is set for May 20 through 23 in Lucerne, Switzerland.

Danish Olympic Additions

Jessica Draskau-Peterson and Jesper Faurschou will run the Olympic marathon for Denmark after their performances at last weekend’s London Marathon.

Also according to the National Olympic Committee and Sports Confederation of Denmark, sailors Anne-Marie Rindom in laser radial and Sebastian Fleischer in RS:X windsurfing will take to the waters of Weymouth and Portland during the Games.

Volleyball Qualifiers

Women’s volleyball qualifying for North America, Central America and the Caribbean comes to a close Sunday in Tijuana, Mexico with only the winner heading to the Olympics.

Qualifying for European women kicks off Tuesday in Ankara, Turkey with a sole spot at the Games also at stake.

Asian Weightlifting Championships

Eleven countries qualified weightlifters for the London Olympics at the Asian Weightlifting Championships.

The tournament ran April 24 to 30 in Pyeongtaek, South Korea.

Chinese Taipei, India, Japan, Kyrgyzstan, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Vietnam booked one spot at the London Olympics for a male weightlifter.

India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Syria, United Arab Emirates and Uzbekistan all earned spots for one female weightlifter at the Olympics.

Wrestling Qualification Tournament

Fifty quotas were earned at wrestling's first World Qualification Tournament in Taiyuan, China.

Three quotas were up for grabs in each weight division of the two men’s styles, Greco-Roman and freestyle, with two available in the four women’s weight classes.

Quotas were reserved for the competitor’s National Olympic Committee, not the winners.
