Torch Relay Update

On Day 31 of its journey to the London Games, the Olympic Torch travels 109 miles from Middlesbrough to Hull.

Along the way, the Flame will ride the 1930s steam engine "Sir Nigel Gresley", which holds the record for fastest steam engine since World War II. The Torch will also cross the Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge, a movable bridge that ferries cars over the River Tees.

David State, one of the 133 torchbearers of the day, stopped midway through his leg of the Torch Relay to propose to his girlfriend.

The cauldron will be lit this evening in Hull’s West Park.

Handball Schedule

The handball teams competing in the preliminary rounds of the handball tournament in London are now confirmed.

Day one of the women’s preliminary competition will see Norway defend its gold-medal status against France.Montenegro and Great Britain will make their Olympic debuts on the same day.

Day two will pit France against Great Britain in the men’s competition for the first time.

The handball tournament will take place at the Copper Box in Olympic Park, a multi-purpose venue that was among the first buildings completed for the Games.

Birthday Honours for Olympics

Among the 1,064 individuals named as receiving the Queen’s Birthday Honours over the weekend, eight have Olympic connections.

Most notably, Tessa Jowell, the U.K.’s first Olympics Minister, will become Dame Towell with her Order of the British Empire, awarded for "for her service in support of the London Olympics." Architect Zaha Hadid also received an OBE for architecture, including the London Aquatics Center.

Six leaders of the Olympic Delivery Authority were also named as Honours recipients.

Mini Firefighters

The London Fire Brigade will patrol Olympic Park in a fleet of firefighting Mini Countryman cars.

"Not only is the Mini an iconic British design, these cars will enable firefighters to travel quickly and discreetly around a busy Olympic park," LFB training director Gary Reason told The Guardian.

BMW's first Mini crossover SUV, the vehicles will be equipped with fire extinguishers, emergency care packs and defibrillators in order to investigate fire alarms and extinguish smaller blazes.
