(ATR) An infrastructure inspection is occurring this week in Lima, Peru as leaders of PanamSports work to reset timelines on delayed construction for the 2019 Pan American Games.
The Infrastructure Sub-commission of the Lima 2019 Coordination Commission arrived in Lima on Aug. 21 and will visit the various venues and sites of future venues that will host competition in less than two years.
One of the primary points of concern for PanamSports leaders is the construction of the Athlete Village, which has yet to begin. Lima 2019 organizers are in the process of awarding the tender of the construction project to one of seven companies shortlisted on Aug. 8. The winner will be chosen on Sep. 8.
The three Infrastructure Sub-commission members Alain Jean Pierre, Camilo Amado and Miguel Angel Mujica are the only Coordination Committee members currently in Lima.CoComm president Keith Joseph along with Emmet Lang, Veda Bruno-Victor, Jimena Saldaña, Nicole Hoevertsz, Aliann Pompey, Marco Arce and Doug Arnot are expected to visit Lima in October.
The commission members are tasked with analyzing construction timelines to certify they are appropriate and ensuring all venues have contractors. Members are expected to speak with Lima 2019 president Carlos Neuhaus.
The commission visit will be followed next month by a visit with executives of PanamSports including president Neven Ilic. The leadership will be joined by the technical, coordination and construction commissions who will stay in Lima for a week to provide help and advice to the OCOG.
Ilic told Around the Rings that PanamSports, also known as PASO, will also begin to negotiate a broadcasting rights deal during its visit to Lima.
"We have two years until the games and we have to decide many things in October," he said.
The current CoComm visit is expected to conclude at the end of the week.
