PanamSports is proud to sponsor Around the Rings' coverage from June 12 to June 19.
(ATR) The Organizing Committee of the Pan-American Games of Lima 2019 (COPAL) continues to send its message of tranquility to the Pan American Sports Organization (PanamSports).
John Chuman, the COPAL representative at the Americas Best Practices Symposium in Miami, updated PanamSports on what he considered "progress" in the preparations for the continental Games and "the challenges for the next few months". Chuman tells Around the Rings that most of the questions in their presentation to the Executive Committee revolved around the construction of the Pan American Village.
"The Village and the other constructions of the main sporting venues should be starting this year in October with a planned completion of five or six months before the Games start, so we would be in time to do the corresponding tests," he said.
Chuman and Blas Pérez, a Cuban who serves as technical delegate of the Peruvian Olympic Committee (COP), are the only Peruvian representatives in the seminar for PanamSport’s 41 National Olympic Committees. The leaders of COP are not in attendance in part due to sanctions they face from the Peruvian government. COP president Jose Quinones is attending the International Weightlifting Federation executive committee meeting in Tokyo.
ATR is told a meeting to elect new leaders of the COP is scheduled for June 28 in Lima with the intention of electing a new Executive Committee headed by the president of the Peruvian Karate Federation, Pedro del Rosario.
PanamSport’s new president, Neven Ilic of Chile, is confident that the Peruvian organizers will fulfill their commitments. Ilic encourages them not to hide their concerns about the tight deadlines of a few construction projects that have yet to begin with two years until the event, such as the Athletes Village.
Ilic revealed his intention to reinforce the monitoring of the preparations by commissions of experts as well as personally. He will take into account the historical experiences that have been affected previous host cities, especially concerning the Athletes Village.
Chuman reiterated that Lima "will make some very special games" that will become "one of the best games in history".
He also reminded ATR of the difficult situation facing the COP while Lima 2019 preparations are ongoing.
"Any kind of fracture in the country will always affect something, but the advantage in this opportunity is that the executive power of the country headed by the President of the Republic is directly driving the support of the Games," Chuman says.
"We are very sorry about what is happening with the COP but that will not prevent the Games from moving forward."
