(ATR) A public selection process for the next Pan American Games mascot is on after Lima 2019 organizers shortlisted the three finalists.
Finalists Amantis, Milco and Wayqi were chosen from more than 1,000 designs submitted by Peruvians in a public contest that ran from February to May.
Amantis, Milco and Wayqi were announced as the finalists on June 16 and the online voting portal was made available late afternoon on June 19.
The online voting portal can now be accessed here and is the only way for Peruvian citizens to submit their selection. The voting process concludes on July 25.
The winning mascot will earn its designer $4,600 while second and third place will receive $3,100 and $1,500 respectively.
Designers Andy Alegre Campos Maverick (Amantis), Andrea Norka Medrano Moy (Milco) and Alfredo Vitor Ayala (Wayqi) will have to wait until July 26 to claim their prize money when the winner is revealed two years ahead of the Lima 2019 Opening Ceremony.
The three mascots represent traditional Peruvian symbols and animals. Amantis closely resembles the ‘Marvel of Peru’ flower that is used in a variety of medicinal purposes. Milco was inspired by traditional Cuchimilco sculptures from the Chancay culture. Wayqi is the rare Lima leaf-toed gecko typically found in archaeological sites near the Rimac and Lurin rivers.
"It has been wonderful to see the enthusiasm shown towards the competition and we are beginning to feel the anticipation and excitement building up as we approach the two-year mark until the Opening Ceremony of the Games," Lima 2019 president Carlos Neuhaus said in a statement.
"This is another step along Lima’s journey to delivering a world class event in 2019 and the whole country is getting behind us. I cannot wait to see who the public chooses as Lima 2019’s official mascot next month."
The winner will join a long list of Pan Am Games mascots including Toronto 2015’s porcupine named Pachi.
The Lima 2019 Pan Ams are slated to run from July 26 to Aug. 11 and the Parapan Am Games from Aug. 23 to Sep. 1.
