Lima, 08 February 2018: Lima 2019 today welcomed the London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC) to its headquarters, as the Pan American and Parapan American Games Organising Committee looks to incorporate global best practices into its legacy planning and guarantee positive, long-term impacts for communities across Peru.
Lima 2019 President Carlos Neuhaus and members of the Sports and Legacy Departments welcomed LLDC Director of Strategy, Marketing and Communications Ben Fletcher to the Lima 2019 HQ. The LLDC was created ahead of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games "to develop a dynamic new heart for east London, creating opportunities for local people and driving innovation and growth in London and the UK." The LLDC continues to use the 2012 Games as a catalyst to transform and integrate one of the most challenged areas in the UK into world-class, sustainable and thriving neighbourhoods.
Mr Fletcher presented London 2012’s legacy strategy, before touring the VIDENA sports complex and other venues with significant legacy functions, including the Athletes’ Village at Villa El Salvador. The 1,096 units that will house the athletes at Lima 2019 will be turned into affordable housing after the Games.
Speaking about Lima 2019’s commitment to delivering long-term legacies for the city and Peru, Carlos Neuhaus said:
"This is the first time Peru has organised a sporting event of this magnitude and we must use this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to leave a meaningful legacy for Peru. That is why we are drawing on world-leading experts like the LLDC so they can share their experiences and help us maximize the Games’ positive impacts.
"The government-to-government agreement signed between Peru and the UK has given us a mechanism for bringing in international best practice in all areas, and we are taking full advantage of that."
Speaking on the conclusion of his three-day visit, LLDC Director of Strategy, Marketing and Communications Ben Fletcher said:
"In 2012, London hosted an amazing Games and we are now delivering the best ever Olympic legacy programme. It has been a pleasure to share our experiences with the highly impressive leadership team at Lima 2019. It is clear that they are going to deliver a memorable event and are planning a powerful and positive legacy which will benefit all of Peru."
Mr Fletcher’s visit is part of a three-day trade mission to Lima organised by the UK Department for International Trade from 6-8 February. Up to 20 UK companies with experience in delivering major sporting events have travelled to Peru to meet with Lima 2019 Organising Committee officials and local companies to explore partnership opportunities at the Games.
About the Lima 2019 Pan American and Parapan American Games:
The Lima 2019 Pan American Games will see approximately 6,700 athletes from 41 countries compete in 39 sports and 62 disciplines. The Games will take place between 26 July and 11 August 2019.
The Lima 2019 Parapan American Games will see 1,890 athletes compete in 17 sports and 18 disciplines between 23 August and 01 September 2019.
