Lima-19 Needs More Promotion in Peru

(ATR) A recent study shows the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima are in need of more promotion less than a year before the event begins.

The research developed by the Lima Organizing Committee (COPAL) concludes that only 15.9 percent of those surveyed in the Peruvian capital know that a major event that will take place in 2019. Of those, 84.4 percent know that it is the Pan American Games.

"While some people remember the logo (27.5 percent), and the mascot Milco (34.5 percent), few end up relating it to the Games," says the report accessed byAround The Rings.

The survey comes at a time when the Peruvian congress has recently passed an anti-corruption law that puts limits on official advertising in private media.

Representatives of COPAL and Panam Sports have criticized this legislation as an obstacle to promote the preparations of Peru in hosting the mega-sport event in the South American country.

Around 80 percent have heard about the Pan American Games, however there is ignorance about the Parapan Am Games, according to the survey.

The 18th Pan American Games will be held in Lima from July 26 to August 11 followed by the Parapan Am between August 23 and September 1.

The research shows that the most needed information, with a view to future communication campaigns, is that referring to the competition venues, the dates of the various events, and ticket prices.

The survey offered ideas in promoting the Games, such as using the athletes and their achievements to create a sports culture and pushing the mascot Milco on television, social networks and at large sporting events such as soccer matches.

Other suggestions included increasing awareness of the economic benefits of the Games in terms of trade and tourism, and making sure the public understands what the success of the Pan American Games means for the prestige of Peru.

In two weeks Lima will organize the Panam Sports General Assembly, giving representatives of the 41 Olympic Committees of the Americas the opportunity to see how preparations are coming for next year's event.
