LA 2024 Vice Chair and Director of Athlete Relations Janet Evans today reiterated the bid’s commitment to making athletes a central part of its Games planning as she travelled to Moscow for the inaugural World Olympians Forum (WOF) in her first international trip as a bid leader.
Evans, the four-time Olympic champion swimmer, joins representatives of 121 National Olympians Associations attending the forum to show their support to the World Olympians Association (WOA), the global body which promotes the interests of Olympians around the world. Evans is leading LA 2024’s Athletes’ Commission and is already working closely with Olympians and Paralympians in California and beyond to ensure athletes’ voices are heard at all stages of LA 2024’s Games concept preparation.
Janet Evans, Vice Chair and Director of Athlete Relations for LA 2024, said:
"The World Olympians Forum is a fantastic initiative and it is an honor to attend this first edition and be surrounded by so many remarkable athletes. As Olympians we are in a privileged position to help promote the Olympic spirit and share the Olympic values around the world. It is a responsibility I take very seriously.
"I am proud as an Olympian to be at the WOF and see what best practices we can take from the forum to LA 2024’s Athletes’ Commission, so we can really make the most of the talent and experience we have on our doorstep in LA."
Over 1,000 Olympians and Paralympians – American and international – live, work and train in Southern California, attracted by the existing world-class facilities, wealth of expertise in every sector of the sports industry and ideal climate for year-round sport. A total of 53 athletes from Southern California brought home gold from the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Evans added: "Olympians are inspirational and they are experts in their sports, so it is really important their voices are heard. At LA 2024 we are taking our lead from the IOC and Olympic Agenda 2020 and creating an empowered Athletes’ Commission. Through our Athletes’ Commission, LA 2024 will look to harness their drive and passion for the Olympic Movement and we will work together to create a bid concept that prioritizes the needs and expectations of athletes."
That athlete-focused approach is already shaping LA 2024’s Games Plan. All five primary venue clusters are within 30 minutes of the Olympic Village, with 50% of sports within 15 minutes of the Village. The latest polls indicate that four out of five LA residents support the Games, and with people from 115 different countries calling LA home, every athlete is guaranteed a warm welcome from a city that truly loves sport.
