Los Angeles 2024’s commitment to a uniquely sustainable and environmentally-friendly Games was reinforced today as the Candidature Committee pledged its support to the participants of the 21st gathering of the "Conference of the Parties" to the 1992 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, taking place in Paris. World leaders are in the French capital as part of a global effort to reduce future temperature rises and the effects of global warming.
Los Angeles has become a pioneer in sustainable development and is committed to extending its focus on the environment to the 2024 Olympic Games Candidature Process. LA has installed the most solar power and has the highest recycling rate of any city in the US, as well as more LEED-certified square feet than any other city in the world. With 85 percent of the world-class venues in its Games Plan already built or planned as permanent facilities, LA is ideally positioned to help the IOC lay down the blueprint for a more sustainable Games.
LA 2024 Chair Casey Wasserman said: "On behalf of LA 2024, I would like to commend all COP21 participants as they gather to search for global solutions to climate change. Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time, and COP21 will be critical for accelerating international action on sustainability.
"Cities have a responsibility to respond to climate change - that’s why Los Angeles has harnessed new innovations to protect our natural environment, often acting as a testing ground for new environmental policies that are later adopted throughout the United States. With California Governor Jerry Brown and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti participating at the Paris summit, we will be following the conference as it progresses and tracking the outcomes with great interest. LA 2024 is committed to creating a sustainable bid in accordance with Olympic Agenda 2020 and, as such, we look forward to listening and learning from the international leaders at the Paris summit."
