Today LA 2024 announced that more than 10,000 people have joined its Volunteer Program, which provides local community service opportunities for those who want to volunteer at the LA Games. Since its inception in February, LA 2024 has provided volunteers for the Angel City Games, Discover LA, Friends of the LA River, Heal the Bay, LA Marathon, Special Olympics Southern California and United Way of Greater LA.

With tens of thousands of volunteers participating in each edition of the Games, the LA bid committee’s 10,000+ volunteers will have first priority to sign up and support the organizing committee if the City of Angels is selected as an Olympic host city.

An independent poll found 88% of Angelenos are united in support of LA 2024’s bid and the robust LA 2024 Volunteer Service Program shows the overwhelming support in action. LA 2024 is building a foundation of community engagement that will leave a legacy long after the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Reflecting LA’s spirit of innovation, LA 2024 uses a digital platform and works with partner organizations to sign up and connect volunteers. The digital platform allows LA 2024 to connect with young people in Los Angeles on their terms, and will provide the OCOG with a powerful tool for recruiting, engaging, retaining and tracking volunteers in the lead up to the Games.

The announcement is part of the bid’s #FollowTheSun to Olympic Agenda 2020 campaign: 20 announcements in 20 days to show how LA 2024 will contribute to the IOC’s strategic roadmap for the future of the Olympic Movement, Olympic Agenda 2020. The Volunteer Service Program announcement aligns with Olympic Agenda 2020’s 23rd recommendation to engage with the general public, and its overarching goal of strengthening Olympism in society.

LA 2024 CEO Gene Sykes said: "LA 2024 is already fostering a legacy of Olympic volunteerism today and our over 10,000 volunteers will create a positive impact in our communities long before the Olympic torch is lit.

"LA 2024’s physical presence across the city and innovative digital volunteer platform are together cultivating a new generation of Angelenos and Americans engaged in the Olympic Movement. By channeling LA’s widespread public support for the Games into volunteerism, we’ll leave a meaningful bid legacy in all of LA’s communities."
